Home Automation

A house can be classified as a Smart Home when a computer is used to control home functions and features, primarily lighting. Seblectric has created a system comprised of various wireless modules which can turn a new house into a Smart Home.

Case Study

The house on the right is under construction and wants to have the Seblectric Home Automation system fitted.

The walls of the house are constructed using old stones which have a lot of character. It would be impossible to run cable ducts down these walls to go to all the switches, without the wires being visible. Thus, the Battery-Operated Wireless Switches are chosen for the entire house. These switches don't have any wires leading to them, which allows the authentic walls to remain that way.

Dimmer modules can be installed out of sight in the ceiling or near power outlets, to connect to the lighting. One dimmer module should be installed in every room, to keep cable lengths to a minimum.

Now there are two options:

1. Computer Controlled System - A small server computer is installed out of sight, and a USB MIMO Touchscreen is connected to it and positioned on a wall in the living room. After setting up the system through the touch screen (this is normally done only once, unless the function of buttons in the house need to be changed), light switches will react and they will switch lights on and off by smoothly fading them. You have the most flexibility with the computer controlled system, as the system can be expanded and upgraded easily over the internet.

2. Master Controlled System - Instead of having a computer running the house permanently, you install a single Master Dimmer in a central room in the house, for example the living room. The master dimmer stores timer events as well as all the actions that need to happen when switches are pressed all around the house. You only need one master in a house, all other rooms still require normal dimmers or switchers. The master can be reconfigured at any time through the use of computer software, which does not require a physical connection as programming is also done wirelessly.

Our RFID Access Control system near the entrance of the house can control exactly who is allowed into the house and at what time, and our motion sensors can switch on and off lights in rooms automatically.

Overview of the two systems:

Classic lighting connection to a switch:

classicswitch
  • Each light has a wire connecting it to a switch
  • Each switch controls only the light connected to that switch
  • Switches can never be reprogrammed or behave differently based on time and date
  • Lights do not dim, and do not fade on and off nicely
  • Switches can not be wireless
Seblectric Master System:

seblectric switch connection
  • All lighting is connected either to the Seblectric master or to other Seblectric dimmers around the house
  • By choosing the dimmer location wisely, shorter wires can be used
  • Place Seblectric Switch Modules throughout the house, exactly where you want them
  • All switch events are stored in the master
  • Timer events can also be stored in the master
  • No computer is needed
  • Reprogram switches at any time, wirelessly

Seblectric Server System:

seblectric switch connection
  • All lighting is connected to Seblectric dimmers around the house
  • By choosing the dimmer location wisely, shorter wires can be used
  • Place Seblectric Switch Modules throughout the house, exactly where you want them
  • The computer handles all switch events and decides which lights should be switched on or off
  • Reprogram switches at any time, through the computer

Using the server system, you can:

  • You can change behavior of buttons and have them change dynamically based on the current time. For example, bathroom lights can switch on fully during the day, and switch on dimmed during the night.
  • Access the entire system via the internet. Forgot to switch off lights? No problem, just switch them off through your website. You can even change who is allowed access to the house and at what time.
  • Switch lights on and off via a touch screen, conveniently placed in the living room designed to act as your home's control panel. Listen to music and choose in which rooms you want to hear the music.
  • Create timer events for all lights in your house. Simulate occupancy when you are on holidays by switching lights on randomly.
